Hey! We should be pen pals!

If you would like to, you can totally write me letters of encouragement this summer! It would mean so much to me! I can only get envelopes forwarded to me….so no packages please! I won’t get them until debriefing! I love getting letters! Who knows? I might get crazy and write back! Haha! I love pen pals! The address is:

So...I come with baggage! (Ok, it is baggage for 10 weeks!)

So today I packed! Last minute, I know! All of my stuff for 10 weeks fits in a large duffel bag, a suitcase, backpack, and carry-on tote! This includes towels, bedding, air-mattress, clothing, toiletries...etc! It was a challenge, but I did it! Now I just need my bags to weigh under 50lbs. apiece tomorrow at the airport! It is 10:31PM right now, I fly out tomorrow at 6:10AM in the morning! It is sooo close! I have so many emotions flooding my body right now! I am SOOOOO excited! I can't wait to see what the Lord is going to do this summer through me! Ahh! So exciting!

The suitcase and carry-on tote (aka purse to the airport people!)! I couldn't get the pic to flip....but you get the point! It is a large piece of luggage

The duffel! I got it at Ross! I really did! But there is a funny Ross rap out there! Here is the link...you will laugh!

The trusty North Face Backpack! We have been on many-a-adventure together!
Not too shabby for ten weeks of stuff! (ok, ok...I can wash my clothes and re-wear them...but still! I am impressed with myself!)

Hey There Summer Hair

So, last summer I got a "beach wave" in my hair because it was sooo easy to take of! Well, I decided to do the same this summer because not having to blow dry and straighten my hair every day sounded so appealing, especially with all the humidity I will have to deal with this summer! Yuck! So I went to Styling Castle (duh!) and had Fred work his magic. I told him to make it curlier than it was last summer....and boy did he! I love it! It is so low maintenance.  BTW, this will be my first summer in 4 years to not work at Styling Castle, very bitter sweet! I worked there is High School and have filled in over breaks this past year! I love my Styling Castle family! I am going to miss them, but they are SOO supportive of me this summer! I love working for Christian bosses! Here are some pics!

Fred took this on his iPhone after he finished "rolling me up." He is getting to be so techy these days!

I had to go show Ashley my hair, oh, and I had to hold my sweet sweet niece! She is 8lbs. and 10 ounces now! Such an oinker! She is still a "little little" though! :)

It's Monday, Monday, Monday...yeah! (Ok, not the same as the Friday song, but you get the point)

First off, it is going to be a good week! Why you ask? Because I get to babysit my niece Kate from roughly 7:15ish- roughly 3:30 Monday-Thursday! I get some good one on one quality bonding time with my girl before I leave for WC! Also, today she is 4 months old! However, she has been a part of our family for a little over a month now! According to my sister's blog she is gestationally 22 days old (she was a preemie).

Kate the day she came home! She was so tiny! She weighed 5 pounds!

Kate today! She is packing on the pounds! :)
I would guess she is about 8 pounds now! This pic makes her look bigger than she is!

Well, after my totally fun day of hanging out with Kate, I went and had dinner with my longest and best guy friend, Matt. Out mothers were great friends before we were born, so we have literally grown up together! We definitely have a brother-sister relationship! Our third person in our trio, Sarah, couldn't get off work in time to come. Her Mom was friends with our mothers before she was born as well! The three of us used to do EVERYTHING together! I was sad she couldn't come tonight, but Matt and I had a great time at Genghis Grill! It was my first time there and it was fantastic! Plus, Matt and I got to catch up and talk about his summer plans working with Street Reach Ministry! He leaves tomorrow!

All time favorite childhood pic of Matt, me, and Sarah!

Afterwards, Matt and I wanted to play Lasertron at Putt Putt. Matt and I NEVER spend money when we hang out, normally we just hand out at one of our houses...so this was a big deal for us. We went to Putt Putt and realized that nobody plays Lasertron on Monday nights...who knew?! So, we called some friends and had them meet us there. While we waited, we played a round of mini-golf. I lost, shocker I know! But we had a lot of fun! I actually had a few "hole in ones!"

Total concentration....could be why he won

I am such a serious golfer....can't ya tell?!?

My "Hole in One" Leap of Victory
Matt's "Hole in One"... Dance?

Sam, one of our life-long friends we called to play Lasertron with us, was the first to arrive. I have known him my whole life as well! He graciously kept score and gave commentary on the game! When Matt and Sam get  together they are quite silly. And I normally don't have a clue what they are talking about, but I did make a Charlie Sheen "Winning" reference, and they were impressed!
Matt and Sam
After our game, I had Sam take a picture of Matt and I together....well, two actually. One shows how we really feel about each other! Haha! Sorry Justin (Matt's roommate), me an Matt will never marry! It would never work out, we are like brother and sister! Haha. Justin insists we will get married one day...he is so wrong!

Picture for out mothers! haha
Sidebar: It was SUPER humid and nasty outside,
hence my ever growing frizz ball hair!

Our true feelings!

After our intense mini golf game, our other two friends arrived! Emily and David have been dating for a good while now...I believe over a year! They both go to Union with me, but Matt and I knew them from different circles. Matt and David have been good friends for a good while now, so Matt also knew Emily (because she was dating David). Emily and I went to Elementary school together way back when. Well, once David, Emily, and I were at Union, we put the pieces together! I value the relationships that I have with Emily and David! They are both precious, godly people that I am so thankful for! I really treasure and am thankful for the discussions I have with Emily. She too is called to ministry, as is David, so it is great to talk about the Lord and how He is using us with one another! Oh, and she suffered through the horrible Monday night, 3 hour, World Geography Class with me this semester....so we are bonded for life through our suffering! Haha!

Lasertron was so much fun! I was sooo bad at it though, but still had a great time! I am thankful for all these people!

All sweaty and gross after playing Lasertron for an hour!

Bittersweet Day (Another long post, but I have a lot to say!)

Today was filled with some mixed emotions. Once I was awake enough to comprehend anything (which for my future WC teammates, it is either after one cup of coffee or after ten minutes of being out of bed...just fair warning!) I realized that I leave for WC in 1 week! Yes, one week.....7 days!!! Ahhhh! This is cray cray (another word for crazy for my older audience.) As I was getting ready for church, I had my iTunes on and I was listening to Sojourn. I simply love them, yet I don't listen to them as often as I should. But Anywhoo, back to my point, I was getting ready and then it also hit me like a ton of bricks that my dear little 8 year old TBCH (Tennessee Baptist Children's Home) friend is leaving Thursday. I was well aware of this fact, I have known it for quite a while. Heck, we even had a party for him Friday night since it was his last weekend with us. But then the emotional reality of today being Sunday hit me. Today would be my last Sunday with him, and possibly the last time I see him. For safety reasons we shall call him Sweaty Boy in this blog. Homeboy breaks out to a sweat sooo easily. It is really comical! Chances are, if you know my  family, you know Sweaty Boy or at least have heard funny stories about Sweaty Boy....there are a lot of those :). He has been apart of our family for almost a year now. I have had the privilege of spending countless weekends and some holidays with this insanely funny, witty, little 8 year old boy who has stolen not only my heart, but my parent's hearts as well as Patrick and Ashley's hearts. He has seriously become a part of our family over the past year. Thus, beginning my day of fighting back tears. So naturally, in the spirit of fighting tears while applying makeup and straightening my hair, I turned up Lecrae and started rapping. Yes, rapping is my coping mechanism for pretty much anything. Happy or sad....Lecrae!

Well, I pushed it to the back of my mind, even though it lingered there all day. I went to Sunday school and then Worship. Let me just say here, I love my home church and am so thankful for Ellendale Baptist! I then went to see the new Pirates movie, went to Kim's going away party (she is working for CentriKid this summer...whoop whoop for students serving over the summer!), and then rushed back to church for evening worship. Now I normally don't see Sweaty Boy on Sunday mornings if he is not coming home with us for lunch (which today was one of those days), so I walked in and immediately saw him sitting where he always sits on Sunday nights....next to my Mom. Insert lump in my throat. I walked up to him and gave him a hug (he gives great hugs) and then started off to where I normally sit. Well, my mother being great at guilt-tripping me, told Sweaty Boy to ask me to sit with them tonight...how could I say no?!?! I couldn't and she knew that....such a smart woman! (My dad is out of town, and A and P stayed home with Kate, so it was just the two of them.) We sat with Sweaty Boy in between us, and then Adam got up to start leading worship. Ok, Sweaty Boy is totally TONE DEAF, and belts out the lyrics loud and proud none the less. Needless to say, I was fighting back the urge to laugh hysterically. I couldn't make eye contact with my Mom because she was trying not to laugh too! You think after a year, we would be used to this...but it is so funny! Adam, if you read this....that is why I was laughing! I was not laughing at you, yall did great!

Well, throughout service, Sweaty Boy was great as usual. And then here comes the "sweetness" of the day. My youth minister got up to make an announcement, and called up the student summer missionaries to be prayed over and "commissioned". Well, I was the only one there tonight, but it was still great none the less. People who I greatly love and cherish came and laid hands on me to pray over me. Sweaty Boy came up too....so sweet. Ok, let me say this again....I love Ellendale Baptist and the amazing people who make up this congregation as well as our amazing staff! and I am sooooo blessed to have grown up there and to have people who know me and love me come and lay their hands on me and commit to pray for me this summer. I also am so blessed to be under the teaching of Dr. Jerry Harmon, who preaches truth boldly! Well, while people were asking me questions about this summer, Sweaty Boy came up to tell me bye...as in bye for good! I didn't cry in front of him, but soon after he gave me a tight squeeze and left I did. I think some people were under the impression that I was teary eyed because of the sweet commissioning that had just happened. And while that was super sweet and made me feel incredibly blessed to have my church supporting me, I was tearing up out of selfishness. For  the past little while, I have been evaluating my reasons for being sad. And sadly, most of them are selfish reasons. I want Sweaty Boy to stay at the TBCH because I love having him in MY life. Or I want Sweaty Boy to stay because there is not another kid on the planet that is nearly as funny or sweet as him, or I want Sweaty Boy in my life because I am always laughing hysterically whenever he is around, or I want Sweaty Boy around to see Kate grow up because I already see how much he loves my niece.....etc. But then I have to remember he is not mine. I knew from day one that he would not be at TBCH forever, or that our family would not be his "friend's family" forever. I knew that. Our other friend's family kid left a few months ago, and while I was sad....I wasn't this sad. I know, I know...I shouldn't have favorites! But here I am, being transparent with you guys (because I told you guys I would be, and because that is a character quality I love in believers....seeing that everything is not "peachy-keen" all the time. I love when believers are honest about the hardships that come with walking with Christ.) So as I sit here and wallow in self pity (which is what I am doing right now), and I ask you to pray for Sweaty Boy as he goes back home. I ask you to pray for his safety and that his mom would do what is best for her son. I also pray that Sweaty Boy would walk with Christ. I also am going to ask you to pray for me and my family, as well as his cottage parents at the TBCH, I know that him going back home will be a tough adjustment on everybody.

As I write, I keep thinking about the bitter-sweetness of today. The sweetness of having a church that loves me that prays over me, as well as the bitterness of having Sweaty Boy go back home and leave the Children's Home. Man, how do I vocalize this on a blog...it is amazing to see the church at work. Both in taking care of its members, as well as serving the world (such as loving and ministering to Sweaty Boy.) There truly is beauty in seeing the church show the love of Christ. Ok, that is all I am going to write. I could go on....but for your sake I won't. I will attach some pics of me and Sweaty Boy. They aren't the greatest of him...and that is on purpose, for safety reasons. But know that for each picture I post, there are hundreds of great pictures that have been taken to document our sweet time with the sweatiest, sweetest, eight year old boy in the whole world.

Sweaty Boy opening his presents at his Surprise 8th Birthday Party we threw!

Ok, I know you probably don't appreciate the funniness of this pic. This pic is one of the worst of him dancing (obviously, his head is cut off). But we were at a Lecrae concert, and Sweaty Boy was doing his "Irish-Jig" dance....which has become a family favorite. It was HYSTERICAL that he was doing it in the middle of a rap concert. I was crying from laughing so hard! He was using the rail for support. Homeboy was moving his feet soooo fast. He was exhausted by the end of the concert!
Me and Sweaty Boy at the Science Museum in Nashville. He is a real man...he wore my heavy Vera Bradley backpack for me! So sweet!

Another cool pic from the Science Museum!

Why I am Blogging (This is a long post, oh so sorry! They all won't be like this I promise!)

I started this blog to document my summer working on staff with World Changers. I have been thinking about blogging for quite awhile now, but I never knew what I would blog about! I feel though that this summer is going to be amazing, and I want to share it with you guys! On my blog, I am going to try to be as transparent as possible. I enjoy transparency in people's blogs that I follow. So if I am having a tough day, I am going to tell you that I am having a tough day! Or if I am beyond joyful, you are going to know that I am beyond joyful! I want my blog to be very real and not sugar coated. I also plan on posting some serious as well as insanely funny things, whatever I am in the mood for really! Haha!

Well, you may be asking yourself, "What is World Changers?" Well, I am so glad you asked! It is a ministry through the North American Mission Board that allows youth groups from all over the country to come into urban areas and do construction work for people living in lower income areas. Youth groups are split up and put into teams aka "crews". The crews are then assigned to a project, and they work on their project site for the whole week. The crews could be doing anything from painting or power washing to even roofing! It really depends on what all the homeowner needs done. Even though the construction is rewarding at the end of the week, that is not the primary reason World Changers is there. I mean, the roofing that the crews do will need to be redone in a few years, or there will anyways need to be another coat of paint in a few years....etc. This makes me think of the verses in Matthew that say, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV). The ultimate goal of the construction is to show the community that the Body of Christ loves them. And through the meeting of the physical needs that they have, we are able to open the door to share the Gospel with the community. In my previous experiences with WC as a student, I was able to talk to not only the homeowner of the house, but also neighbors and other people in the community who had questions about why some youth were spending a week out of their summer to do hard manual labor for people we didn't even know in a community where we didn't even live. This obviously presents the opportunity to share the Gospel to them!

Now you may be thinking, "Well Carly, how did you get on staff and what will you be doing all summer?" Well, aren't you too sweet for wondering! I started the application process in the fall after my youth minister, Nathan, told me about it. I prayed a few weeks about it and then started the application process, which consisted of a lot of paper work, a phone interview (which for me ended up being in person since the amazing Ashley Tucker was at Union for the weekend! whoop whoop!), and then an interview weekend in Nashville. Surprisingly, throughout all the various interviews, I had a peace about the whole thing. I never was really nervous or anxious, which is soooo out of character. Haha! I found out in February that I had been hired for the position I had applied for, which is an "Office Manager." There are a lot of things that I will be responsible for, but I won't go into any details now....but lets just say it is a great thing that I am a type A and organized person. I am going to be using my organization and multitasking skills all summer long! I am on the "Mid-West Team." On our team, there are four college students (2 girls and 2 boys), and we will be together all summer long and work all of our assigned camps together. If you would like to pray for them by name, that would be great! Logan is our AV guy/team leader. Jared is our worship leader. And Devan is our Missions Communicator Specialist! I am super pumped about our team. Jared and Logan have worked WC before, and me and Devan are both new! We will be working camps in Salt Lake City, UT, Tulsa, OK, St. Louis, MO, and Joplin, MO! I am so excited! I fly out for training early (like 6am early) on Sunday, May 29! Well, I guess that is all I will write for now! Here are some pictures from last years World Changers that I participated in at East St Louis! **I am posting these because I can't stand reading blogs where people don't post pictures! Haha! So I will always try to include pictures on my blog! :)**

Me and my girls being cheesy in our WC shirts and clean tool belt thingys! (this was obviously the first day!)

My crew! We were hot and sweaty...which is to be expected at WC!
